Promotion was special – especially at my age
Name: Andy Oakes. What team are you involved with?: Poynton Football Club. Position: Centre midfield, centre forward, bench – whichever is deemed more appropriate. How long have you been playing for?: For Poynton – 10 years. What do you enjoy most about it?: Playing competitively to a good standard with the best group of lads you could wish to meet. Real family atmosphere and genuinely good fun. Do you train all year round?: During the season we train once a week as a club, twice a week in pre-season. I tend to try and keep myself ticking over all year round. Where do you train?: Poynton Sports Club. What do you enjoy the most about your sport?: The most enjoyable thing for all of us is having a team that is consistently one of the best in the league and that’s down to all the hard graft and dedication that not only the players put in but all of the management and people associated with the football club. It’s a very social club and everyone meets up outside of the club to go out and have a few beers etc, which is great. Where and when do you meet?: Training is on a Tuesday night usually at the club. Outside of that, any sports social usually starts at the sports club and goes on from there. What is the best thing about Macclesfield?: Sense of community and down-to-earth nature of the people who live there.
What is the worst thing about Macclesfield?: The traffic. What is the most memorable sportsrelated thing to have happened to you?: Promotion last year into the top division was pretty special – especially at my age (35). What has been your greatest sporting achievement?: Playing professionally – very briefly. Do you play any other sports?: Golf at Bramhall Park – I’m a bit erratic but there’s nothing better in the summer.
