Askey disappointed with defence

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey felt his team’s defending wasn’t up to scratch following their 5-3 defeat to Lincoln City.

A Liam Hearn hat-trick helped the home side recover from two goals down inside the opening seven minutes to condemn the Silkmen to another defeat.

While Askey believes the problems that his defenders were making can be easily solved, he was still very frustrated with what he saw.

“I thought we played some really good football, but we weren’t able to defend balls out wide so I’m very disappointed with our defending today,” he said.

“It’s probably as disappointed as I’ve been with us defensively, because in the past we have always done well and it’s something we’ve built on and to be 2-0 up and to do what we’ve done it isn’t good enough.

“Obviously we had a great start and the goals that we gave away were shocking really, every single goal that we gave away was poor, they didn’t have to break us down at all.

“I thought every time we went forward we looked dangerous and there was a lot of good performances, it was just that we couldn’t defend balls coming in from 30, 40 yards, which is very disappointing as that’s bread and butter really.

“All we can do is work and things like that are easy to work on because it’s about getting your head on the ball and being brave.”
