Centre campaign hits £19k

-

CAMPAIGNERS trying to bring Poynton Community Centre back into use have praised the support of the community.

Since launching an appeal to rescue the building, which is based in the historic village school and dates back to 1838, more than £19,000 has been raised in donations.

However, this is £6,000 short of its £25,000 target for repairs so it can remain a functioning home to a range of groups, clubs, organisations and businesses to hold meetings and host events.

Among those who contributed were Audit Medical and the Lady Warren Bulkeley Trust which donated a £1,000; Barclays Bank which donated almost £1,000; and further donations from Mates DIY and Waitrose.

Money has also been raised at an open garden day, centre users open day, Poynton Show stand and a charity concert featuring Joe Beard and the Radnor Band and Desert Wind at Poynton Legion Club.

More than 100 people turned out to the event, which raised almost £800 for the centre.

Town councillor Geoff King said: “The team at the Poynton Community Centre would like to say a huge thank you to all those people who have given so generously to enable us to start to bring the building back into use.

“We have received so much from so many and for that we are extremely grateful.”

While lots of work has been done to the centre, it still needs outside lighting, decorating in the lobby, toilets and north room, and curtains for the small hall.

Stage two of the project is for a replacement roof for the main hall and then a total refurbishment.
