Two girls in hospital after horror road crash

- STUART GREER

TWO teenage girls are seriously ill in hospital after a horror crash at a notorious accident blackspot.

A black Vauxhall Corsa driven by a 17-year-old man collided with a wall on the Buxton Old Road before flipping onto its roof.

It had been travelling from Teggs Nose in the direction of Macclesfield when the incident occurred at around 10.50pm on Sunday, October 11.

Two of the passengers, both 16-year-old girls from Macclesfield sustained significant injuries.

Hannah Ditcham, a pupil at Fallibroome Academy, is currently being treated at Salford Royal Hospital, a trauma centre specialising in head injuries.

The other girl, whose name has not been released, is being treated at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

The driver and a third passenger – a 16-year-old girl from Macclesfield – suffered minor injuries.

Francis Power, head of school at Fallibroome Academy, said everyone at the school was ‘deeply concerned’ about Hannah adding: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the Fallibroome community go out to her and her family at this terrible time. We all hope to see Hannah back with us in school very soon.”

Coun Mick Warren, who represents Macclesfield East ward on Cheshire East Council, said he is campaigning to reduce the speed limit on Buxton Old Road. The former police sergeant said: “It is awful to learn what happened to these young people. “I really hope they make a swift recovery.”

He added: “It is a busy road because it is used as a shortcut but it isn’t easy to drive. It’s a quiet lane by design, deceptively narrow and you pick up speed easily coming down it.

“We see regular crashes. I have been pushing for a 30mph limit and even suggested shutting it off completely at one end to prevent it being used as a rat run but that’s not possible. Instead we are proposing a 40mph limit all the way up to where it meets the A527.

“I am hopeful after consultation we can things changed by the new year.”

Witnesses to the accident are urged to contact Cheshire police on 101, quoting incident 978 of 11 October 2015.
