Curtis table goes on sale again

THE owner of Ian Curtis’s kitchen table is braving potential backlash by attempting to sell it for a second time.

The Joy Division singer’s old furniture is being auctioned by superfan Terry Harrop, who in 2013 managed to attract a bid of £8,400, but the sale didn’t complete. The auction was condemned by former members of the iconic band and Ian’s family.

A statement published in music magazine NME read: “Joy Division original members Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris would like to lend their voice of support to Deborah and Natalie Curtis, who have been caused great distress over media reporting of the sale of the table originally owned by the family, and currently being auctioned on eBay.

“Deborah and Natalie would like to point out that the sale of this table has nothing whatsoever to do with them. Furthermore, they consider the sale of a personal family item, and the subsequent media reporting, to be distasteful and upsetting.”

Terry, from Annan in Scotland, said he is selling the unique item so he can buy equipment to record music with his band Always the Way.

In the listing Terry describes the table as ‘the ultimate Christmas present for the ultimate Joy Division fan’. The auction ends at 7.45pm on October 17, and the highest bid is currently £1,020. Terry bought the table almost 10 years ago for just £100 from Ian’s former neighbour Dorothy Bentley Smith, who bought the singer’s house on Barton Street and ran it as a bed and breakfast after his death.
