Lottery win is second for family

-

SANDRA Newsome was having her hair done when she learned she had finally won the weekly £1,000 jackpot in the East Cheshire Hospice lottery.

She had won the odd fiver and tenner during her 19 years in the draw until her luck really changed.

Sandra, from Macclesfield, said: “I was at the blow-dryer stage and screamed with delight when the phone call came through. Our son Paul had won the £2,000 jackpot before but this was my biggest win of any kind.

“I’ve treated the family from the winnings and bought some expensive perfume. My husband Roy also plays the lottery and we realise its importance to the community, especially after losing his brother Gordon to cancer and friends and a neighbour.”

The couple have raised more than £6,000 for the hospice from staging charity nights. Meanwhile, the lottery is proving a winner among supporters of the charity’s New Bed Appeal which has so far raised over £58,000.

More than 300 new lines have been bought in the last few weeks, generating an extra £1,300 a month which is enough to buy one new bed from extra lottery sales alone.

Lottery manager Paul Marsh said: “At just £1 a ticket it’s an easy way to give regularly to the hospice with a chance of winning something back and a lot of winners also donate some of their prize money.”

The lottery celebrated its 20th anniversary in March this year and continues to raise 10 per cent of the total funding to keep the hospice open every day of the year.

The New Bed Appeal has a target of £153,000 and it is hoped lottery support will pay for two of 17 beds needed.
