Fortune favours the brave on high circuit
braved a chill wind and the threat of worse weather to come as they set off from Rushup Edge near Castleton recently at the start of a stiff, 14-mile circuit around Edale.
After heading uphill towards Mam Tor and on to Hollins Cross, the route descended to Edale village and across to Edale moor, which could be clearly seen in the distance and seemed a somewhat daunting challenge.
Fortunately, by this time the weather seemed to be improving and one or two layers of clothing were shed in preparation for a steep and prolonged climb to Ringing Roger, culminating in an easy scramble to the rocks on the summit which provided the ideal spot for lunch.
With the sun now starting to shine and the views becoming increasing impressive, the group carried on along a level track contouring at about 600m (2,000ft), overlooking the slopes back down to the Edale valley.
A minor detour was made to climb up to the high point of Grindslow Knoll and then on to the weird, rocky stance of Crowden Tower.
Just as the track intercepted the Pennine Way, the walkers headed over rough, tussocky grass up to a knoll called Swine’s Back for a short break. The final hill of Brown Knoll could be seen in the distance.
Setting off once again, the summit trig point in its surrounding peat was achieved and then the group made their way over the peaty terrain to reach the top of the Chapel Gate track and return to the starting point having climbed over 3,000ft in total during the course of the day.
