Prestbury’s name on A team shield

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

DESPITE some poor weather conditions on the early part of the A, B and Plate team matches all of the players from the teams representing their clubs on finals day Alsager Golf Club put on a great show both on and off the course.

The previous day they hosted the Business Ladies finals which saw Hazel Grove enjoy a comfortable win over Didsbury.

The A teams were first out and had the worst of the weather with Prestbury, recently beaten in a tight finish in the Bell Cup, took on Ringway.

Prestbury captain Gill Mellor gave her team a flying start winning the opening match against Wad Grayson and her example was followed by Mary Weaver, Jean Duncan and Trish Hunt to post the four points needed for victory with Ellen Cail, Myra Penkethman and Sheila Bowie completing the Prestbury team to put their name on the trophy for the first time since the new format was introduced in 2007.

Next up was the B team match between Romiley and near-neighbours Bramhall, Romiley earning victory in the competition for the first time since 1977 and a fifth time overall.

The finals match for the Plate saw Tytherington, looking to add to their big total of wins, take on Ringway. The early highlight was a hole in one on the 175-yard first hole for Tytherington’s Janet Ions which inspired her to victory over Pam Evans.

It is also believed to be the first ace ever to be achieved on finals day.

Taking Tytherington through to another win in the Plate were Ewa Sidorcz, Sue Butler and Rachel Smith.

Cheshire Lady Captain Marion Scowcroft was on hand to present the trophies to the winning teams and give them all praise for reaching finals day and also to East Cheshire League secretary Sarah Loy and her helpers for their great work on the day and throughout a long season.

The winning teams now go to meet their West Cheshire counterparts to decide the top teams in the county.

Sarah Loy said: “The season began in April and featured teams of seven players in each league.

“In the A division 14 teams of seven played 36 matches, in the B division there were 35 teams playing 120 matches, the Plate had 30 teams playing 48 matches and in the Business ladies there were eight teams of three playing 48 matches.

“Adding in quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals it meant that a total of 331 matches had been played in the season.”

Macclesfield ladies enjoyed an Exchange D ay at Hale Golf Club and none more than the hot trio of Julia Dunne, Kath Brocklehurst and Maggie Bardsley who cruised to victory by three points from Myra Clark, Greeba Jones and Doris Walker with Judy Mutter, Sue Lawton and Janette Brown next in with 66.

Two long-serving Macclesfield members have been celebrating with Angus Abraham being made a life member. The Abraham family have been members of the club for more than 100 years and Angus himself since he was a junior.

Another life member Bill Milligan celebrated 50 years since playing in his first competition at his beloved club.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Charles Green after a cpo on 38 points with Sally Trussell, Roderick Scott and John Trinder.

The latest round of the Challenge medal at Mot- tram Hall was led in by Alex Johnson with a neat 70 seeing him clear of Joe Lau 72 and Deborah Mawman and Paul Geddes, both 73.

A Saturday Stableford at Styal had division one topped by Sam Howell with 40 points, one more than Ryan Nevins and Steve James. In division two Brian Appleby was five points clear with his card of 38.

Next day another Stableford was won by Paul Hill with 39 points from John Dickinson and Andy Sharrocks, both 38.
