Sweet success for Treacles

-

A WOMEN’S institute group in Tytherington welcomed 100 local women to its second meeting.

Tytherington Treacles, Cheshire’s 200th WI, was started by friends April Ackerley and Sarah Hargreaves, who say they are ‘blown away’ by the interest in the group.

And April, 38, says the Treacles are part of the ‘new wave’ of WIs.

She said: “People laughed when I told them we were starting the group, as there is a perception they are just for older ladies, but that’s not the case.

“We have women from their 30s to their 70s _ I think we’re part of the new wave of WIs.”

She added: “We started the group as we wanted to learn new skills but not just one specific thing, like with a weekly French class for example.

“With the WI you can learn so many different skills monthly.”

The ladies welcomed speaker and actor Derek Poulson to their second meeting for a talk on his travels around the British Isles and the dialects he encountered along the way.

April said: “He had us in stitches by taking off different accents.”

Next month the meeting’s theme will be upcycling household and garden objects.

April said: “Making the most of what you have is more an old generation thing but we’re coming back to the idea now.”

Tytherington Treacles meet on the second Monday of the month at Marlborough Primary School, Tytherington Drive at 7.30pm. Their next meeting is on Monday, April 11.
