Farewell to lifelong resident

-

FAMILY, friends and the community have said goodbye to a lifelong Bollington resident.

The funeral for Eric Coyne was held at Macclesfield Crematorium after he died at Macclesfield Hospital on June 1 aged 96.

He last featured in the Express in 2014 when he celebrated his diamond wedding anniversary with wife Betty.

Their daughter Jeanette Greeve said: “The diamond wedding of my parents was one of the most wonderful events in their lives and we are so pleased that they were still together to share in this memorable occasion.

“The funeral was both sad and at the same time an opportunity to celebrate my father’s long life.”

Eric was born in Bollington in 1919, the youngest of five children, and lived in the town most of his life apart from a brief period when the family moved to Shrigley Hall. He attended St Gregory’s school and worked at Clarence Mill at a time when Bollington had a thriving cotton industry. Eric served in the war and travelled extensively in Europe, North Africa and Asia.

He married Betty at Bollington Congregational Church in 1954.

Eric’s son in law Peter Greeve said: “I knew Eric for more than half of his 96 years.

“It was a pleasure to have known such a kind, considerate, gentle and unselfish person who always had a good sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye.”
