Haigh can hit heights

FORMER world champion Ricky Hatton admits he is expecting big things from Macclesfield boxer Jake Haigh after he signed with the Hitman.

Haigh will be promoted by Hatton Promotions, and will also be trained by Ricky at his gym in Hyde.

The 21-year-old was ranked in the top ten super-middleweights in England as an amateur, but has now decided to try his hand in the paid ranks.

He’s set to make his debut in the autumn, and Hatton is confident that the youngster will have a lot of success.

“Jake is a very talented kid and as soon as I saw him I knew he has what it takes to go far,” he said.

“Obviously coming straight out of the amateurs it takes time to adapt to the pro style, but he’s getting there day by day and I’m very excited about his potential.

“He’s a very tall and rangy boxer who can be awkward and keep his opponent at distance, but he can mix in close as well so I think he’s going to be one to watch.”

Haigh has already started working with Hatton in the gym, and he admitted he was a bit overwhelmed by the company at first.

“I was a bit awestruck the first few days because Ricky is one of Britain’s best ever fighters,” he said.

“I took my mum and dad to the gym one day as well and they were going crazy, but I’ve settled in now and I’m learning something new every day.”
