James has high hopes for Silkmen

- SHELDAN KEAY

NEW Macclesfield Town signing Kingsley James believes the team will be challenging near the top of the table this season.

The 24-year-old midfielder has joined the Silkmen on a one-year deal from Halifax Town, who were relegated from the National League last season.

James is glad to be staying in the National League, and is confident that Macc have what it takes to be in the promotion hunt.

“I’m delighted to get it over the line. It dragged on a bit longer than both parties wanted it to but it’s done now and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

“When Halifax got relegated I spoke to the chairman and said that I wanted to play as high as I could and he understood the situation.

“As soon as I heard that Macc were interested I wanted to sign and go straight back into full-time football, and I think it’s a good match.

“The style of play that John Askey plays suits me so that’s how it has come about. I like to get on the ball and pass it and I like to start moves.

“Last season I got into double figures in terms of goals but I’m not sure if I’ll be deployed in that department or whether I will be more holding like I was at Chester.

“Macclesfield have done well for the past two years despite what people have said about the budget. I think John wants to bring in quality players and get a strong squad together so there is no reason why we can’t get into the top five.”

James has come up against Macclesfield several times in the past, and revealed he was always impressed with what he saw.

“Every time we played against them they played the right way and things are done in the right matter,” he said.

“They always seem organised and well drilled so I’m looking forward to being part of the squad.

“There is a core of the squad together that have been here for the last few years, so we need everyone to pull in the same direction.

“Having gone through what I went through last season with a massive high and then a massive low at the end of it, I’m looking forward to competing near the top of the division.”

Along with Halifax, James has also played for Chester, Port Vale and Hereford during his career.
