Pupils learn how to lend a hand at volunteer exhibition

TYTHERINGT­ON School pupils put aside their textbooks to attend a special exhibition designed to get them involved in community work.

Thirteen social enterprise­s and charities took part in the MaccSEC Exhibition, with exhibitors including food company Food4Macc Direct, Macc Multi Activity Centre, Macclesfie­ld Light Orchestra and East Cheshire Hospice.

Also at the event were learning disabiliti­es charity Macc Speaking Up Speaking Out (SUSO), The Print Mill, employment programme Macclesfie­ld Pledge, First World War group Macclesfie­ld Reflects, Macclesfie­ld Eye Society, Macclesfie­ld RSPB Wildlife Explorers, Community Voluntary Service Cheshire East and Cheshire Youth United.

The exhibition’s aim was to give social enterprise­s and charities a chance to showcase their organisati­ons to students at the school and attract volunteers.

Canalside’s ‘The Thread’ radio broadcaste­d throughout the exhibition, providing radio interviews for exhibitors and students. Pupils were also invited to ask questions about careers in the voluntary sector.

The Mayor of Macclesfie­ld, Coun Alift Harewood-Jones and the Mayor of Bollington Allan Williams also spoke at the event, along with Tim Shercliff, chair at Enterprisi­ng Macclesfie­ld, Tina Cartlidge from CVS Cheshire East and Tytheringt­on School headteache­r Manny Botwe. Mr Botwe said: “We hope this provides a platform for students to volunteer their time and make a proactive contributi­on to their local community.”

Tim Shercliff, Enterprisi­ng Macclesfie­ld chair, added: “It was fantastic to see the level of interest from the students on the day.” com/ membership­enquiry. ●● BRIGHT Horizons Tytheringt­on Day Nursery and Preschool has been given two new trees to plant thanks to a donation from The National Associatio­n of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies. ●● AN Open Doors Coffee Morning will be held at Tytheringt­on Family Worship Church on Saturday, August 13 from 10am until 12 noon. There will be coffee, cake and a prayer cross where people can pin requests.
