●● AN AUTHOR will sign copies of her first novel.

Brenda Braithwait­e, whose pen name is Lily Graham, lives with husband Roger on Longbutts Lane, Gawsworth. She is achieving her dream of becoming an author despite a rough upbringing on a deprived housing estate.

Her first book, The Phone Rang, tells the experience­s of a young mother who is abused by her husband.

The Phone Rang is available on Amazon.

Brenda is holding a book signing on Wednesday, August 10, at Café Waterside, Bollington.

Books will be available to purchase on the day.

Brenda will be at the café from 9am to 11am.

She has been busy recently going around several WIs in the local area.

She said: “This event will be a great opportunit­y for anyone I’ve missed to have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee.” ●● THE HAPPY Valley Artisan Market is happening this weekend.

Stalls along the canal sell a variety of gifts, arts and crafts made by local people.

It opens from 10am to 3pm on the first Sunday of each month, situated at Clarence Mill. There is free parking but limited space. ●● THIS year’s Summer Reading Challenge has the theme ‘The Big Friendly Read’.

Children can sign up and accept the challenge to read six books and visit the library four times over the summer holidays and there are various events.

On Thursday, August 4, children can call in any time between 10am and 4pm to decorate a biscuit and make a finger puppet. There is a charge of 50p per biscuit or puppet. Children must be accompanie­d by an adult.

Then there is a Make a Dream Catcher event on Friday, August 12.
