Noticeboard
●● THE ANNUAL rushbearing service will take place at Forest Chapel next month.
It’s a traditional service which dates back to medieval times when rushes were often spread on the earthen floors of churches to provide insulation and keep the dust down.
Over time, the annual job of changing them evolved into an elaborate ceremony with a procession and the strewing of flowers.
Forest Chapel Rushbearing is on August 14, at 3pm, at St Stephen’s Church, Forest Chapel.
The visiting preacher will be Rev John Harries of the Peak Parish.
He oversees the new benefice created last October with Sutton and three other amalgamated parishes. It includes St James in Sutton, St Michael in Wincle, St Saviour in Wildboarclough and St Mary the Virgin in Bosley.
The service is at 3pm at St Stephen’s in Forest Chapel.
All are welcome, with an opportunity for families to enjoy the views of the forest and moors.
There is free parking and a picnic space. ●● PRODUCERS are asked to start getting entries ready for this year’s Sutton Ex Servicemen’s Club 50th annual Flower and Vegetable Show.
There will be a variety of fruit and veg classes at the event which takes places at the club, in a large marquee on Spooners Flats, Hollin Lane.
Those who have entered before will receive a schedule of classes but others can request an application form from Robert Barnard on 01260 253264.
