Jess invited to train with future stars

AS the GB team set off for Rio, the talent of the future were selected to attend an open session with the UK’s top coaches.

Jess Zalasko was invited from the Macclesfield Boys Boxing Club to attend having recently been talent spotted at Ricky Hatton’s gym in Hyde on a squad session.

It was a full day training session taking place on Sunday, with all the boxers arriving early in the morning.

It consisted of a track session covering a one kilometre run, and with times taken this was ideal as she took the best time out of the group twice.

They had a break after the run then proceeded to do a shadow box session where they were all assessed on stance, form and technique with feedback throughout.

After lunch there was a discussion on international travel and what is expected of a GB boxer, plus nutrition was covered in depth with questions and answers.

Next all of the boxers took part in a sparring session, again being analysed and giving feedback. Jess had a fantastic day and really caught the eye of the coaches present and as such the Macc coaches feel it won’t be too long before she’s invited again.

As Jess was strutting her stuff in Sheffield, a group of young boxers were also out in Tameside in another skills bouts session in preparation for next season.

Joe Straw had some good sparring along with 13-year-old big Joe Bradley who was keen to get back in the ring, while 15-year-old Harry Horne had a tough opponent but rode the storm and finished ahead of his opponent.

The majority of competing boxers from MBBC completed medicals in preparation for the next season which is already stacking up to be another great season for MBBC athletes.
