Newton’s winning run continues

JUST two weeks after winning the Cheshire Championsh­ip Prestbury Golf Club star James Newton struck again to win a close contest in the Wilmslow Crow.

The Wilmslow course was in terrific condition despite heavy rain earlier in the week as it staged the annual 36-hole competitio­n as the first part of the Cheshire Cat and the second part at Stockport had to be postponed on the following day to July 29 after the course was still suffering the after effects of the dreadful weather.

The first round leader was Ben Hallam (Wychwood Park) with his 67 return giving him a one-shot lead over Ian Kenwright (Haydock Park), Sam Turner (Lytham St Annes) and Lewis George (Delamere Forest with Newton well placed on 69.

Newton showed his fighting spirit to card 68 in round two, level with Cheshire team mate Sam Prince (Northenden), and he had 11 birdies in his two rounds to end at seven-under-par 137 which was matched by Kenwright but the count-back went in favour of Newton for his better second round.

Also in the frame were Sam Turner 138, Lewis George and Ben Hallam 139, Richard Shaw (Enville) 141 and Sam Prince, Paul Kinnear (Formby) and Stephen Hargreaves (Leasowe) 142.

The points gained by Prince took him back to the top of the Galvin Green Northern order of Merit with 545 points leaving him 20 clear of Tom Dolan (Heswall).

Prestbury’s men enjoyed President’s Day and none more than Gary Titchen who led in with 68, two shots clear of Matthew Sorrigan, Simon Bolam and Nicholas Baglin.

Prestbury legend and retiring chairman Arthur Dicken was the star man in the Prestbury Past Captain’s Summer Golf Day as he posted 37 points to win the coveted silver salver.

The Prestbury Junior Trophy was won by Matthew Delany with 71 from Hannah Li 74 and Matthew Salt 76.

Wilmslow’s men played for the Stanley Hilldrup Trophy and it was won by Philip Barber and Norman Griffiths with 67.5 ahead of Reg Maddock and Paul Robinson 68 and Richard Greer and Joseph Wee 69.

The prestigiou­s Alderley Edge Challenge Cup saw Peter Burns enjoy his birthday as the 24-handicappe­r posted a fantastic 64 to finish ahead of Andrew Marshall 66 and Oliver Lane and Criag Aston, both 67.

Edge’s ladies played for the Captain’s Prize and it was taken by Mo Monk with 74, three clear of Olwen Davies and Sue Kendrick.

A Wednesday Stableford at Styal saw David Grham in charge with 39 points from Lee Wolstenhol­me 37 and Khalil Musa and Simon Tracy, both 36.

A Styal Saturday Stableford had Harrison Peck top of division one with 38 points, one more than Steve James and Dominic Taylor.

Giovanni Porro topped division two with 37 points, one more than Andrew Murray.

Sytal ladies played round ten of the Summer Cup and Tracey Pogson led in with 16 points, four more than Elaine Burgess.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Graeme Nimmo with 39 points, three more than Martin Hill and John Hogan.

The Manchester and District Alliance’s Williams BMW Junior Challenge Trophy (holders Styal) has reached the quarterfin­als stage.

Davyhulme Park v Bramall Park; Bolton Old Links v Leyland; Hazel Grove v Poulton Park; Rossendale v Stamford.
