Gym set to move in at former nightclub
A FORMER nightclub could be transformed into a 24-hour town centre gym.
Anytime Fitness has submitted plans to convert the building on Duke Street, which is near the proposed cinema development.
The building has been empty for five years and was once a nightclub called Krumbles, and later known as Angels.
In planning documents Anytime Fitness is described as ‘one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing 24-hour fitness franchises’.
It boasts 3,100 clubs worldwide and ‘prides itself on providing its members with convenient and affordable fitness options in well maintained facilities which feature top-quality exercise equipment and state-of-the-art security and surveillance systems’.
It would create 10 full time jobs.
The gym would not always be staffed but includes security measures including wireless devices that gym members can wear when working out and activate if needed.
In a planning statement Anytime Fitness said: “The proposed gymnasium provides an opportunity to utilise a vacant unit in a highly sustainable and accessible location which would help to diversify while also complementing the existing mix of uses within the existing town centre of Macclesfield.
“It has been demonstrated that the proposal would not cause any adverse impact upon the amenity of neighbouring occupiers with regard to noise, light pollution or crime.”
The nearest residential property is about 50 metres away.
The scheme has been backed by Macclesfield Civic Society.
Secretary Keith Smith said: “The Civic Society welcomes the proposal as finding a beneficial use for a large town centre building.
“This is within a mixed area and there are unlikely to be any significant amenity impacts. Convenient parking is immediately adjacent.”
