Styal pair into Trophy finale

STYAL Lady Captain Aileen Holohan and former Lady Captain Claire Whitney will represent their club in the final of the Manchester Past Lady Captain’s Trophy at North Manchester GC.

They won the qualifying round at Fairfield Golf Club posting 39 points to finish ahead of Gill Fricker and Pat Southall (Denton 38 and Pleasingto­n’s Janet Steven and Judith Isherwood.

In the final they will take on the winners and runners-up from the first qualifier and Janet and Judith looking to bring the trophy back to Styal for the first time in the club’s history.

Claire kept up her hot streak back at Styal winning a medal with a fine score of 65 seeing her well clear of Diana Prow 71 and Joan Andrews 72.

Styal’s men played a qualifier for the President’s Putter and Steve Wild led in after winning a cpo on 42 points with Alan Lines.

The ever-busy Styal Seniors were also in Stableford mode with good scoring led in by David Greenwood with 43 points from David Riley 42 and Brian Appleby 41.

Medal play at Wilmslow had Tim Jackson first past the post with 69 ahead of Junior captain hywel Shaw 71 and Tom Donald and Sam Hobson, both 72.

A profession­al’s prize at Alderley Edge was led in by Tom Troup with 41 points from Robert Anderson 39 and Michael Davies and Dan Feathersto­ne, both 38.

Edge’s ladies played a Stableford to support the Golf Foundation and it needed a cpo on 37 points to give Julie Ricketts top spot from Gwyneth Holt.

Macclesfie­ld ladies enjoyed Lady Captain’s Day with Cath Atkin well clear with her nett 70 tak- ing her six shots clear of Gill Evans and Kath Brocklehur­st.

Sue Orwin had the best gross of 92 and Myra Clark won the Past Captain’s Prize with 80 and the 30-36 handicap prize went to Jennette Brown with 78.

The Scratch Gold medal at Davenport had Joseph Clay first past the post with 67 from Trevor Glover 68 and Jared Merrygold and Mark Kilpatrick, both 70.

Davenport ladies played a Stableford as their qualifier for the MDLGA 2107 Bunty Booth competitio­n and the top score came in division three from Gillian Garbett with 40 points, one more than Dierdre Newman.

The other divisions were led in by Christine Thwaites and Angela Harding, both with 36 points.

David Stevenson was unstoppabl­e in a singles Stableford at Mottram hall posting an amazing 47 points to lead in from Peter Smith 41.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Peter Will with 39 points, one more than Nick Rainford and Martin Hill.

Prestbury junior Matthew Gardner was the star turn in the medal for the Founders Vase with a superb round of 68-3-65 taking him one clear of another top junior Thomas Kirton.
