Raise a glass for theatre group’s show

- RHIANNON MCDOWALL

THE town’s award winning amateur theatre group has unveiled its plans for the new season.

Macclesfield Amateur Dramatics Society (MADS) ended its 2015-16 season with a huge list of accolades from industry competitions, and members are hoping the new season will be just as popular.

This year they have added another play to the usual repertoire and will be performing Six by Tenn, a series of six short plays by Tennessee Williams, as part of a festival in October.

First up, running from September 12 - 17, is Pub Quiz is Life, by Richard Benn, the same writer of One Man Two Guv’nors.

It revolves around the character of Lee, an exsoldier who has returned from Afghanistan. His father, Bunny, crippled with multiple sclerosis, is part of a quiz team that usually consists of himself and Woody, the local drug-dealer who, incidentally, supplies Bunny with the cannabis that brings him some relief.

Lee joins the team and recruits Melissa who is working on the regeneration of Hull and brings an expensive education to the quiz.

Francesca Dykes, who is directing the production, said: “Pub Quiz is Life has given cast, director and crew more challenges than we expected. The play has hidden depth, sadness and some disturbing violence alongside huge laughs, unlikely friendships and discovering which of Mabel’s many husbands she actually liked!”

Mabel is played by Suzanne Copeland, ex soldier Lee by newcomer Nic Stacey-Hipkin, drug dealer Woody by Luke Oldham and Bunny by Keith Oldham. Exjunkie and born again Christian, Baz is played by Kayleigh Smith, Rachel Donlon cameos as Cath, and Elizabeth Bloor plays Melissa, from Hull Advance.

The play contains adult themes and some strong language. Tickets cost £8 and £10 and are on sale now from www.ticketsource.co.uk/madstheatre or on 01625 611974.

Other productions in the pipeline are Once a Catholic, Dial M for Murder, Jerusalem and Flamingoland.

Season tickets are also available for the forthcoming season.

These are priced at £35 and include tickets to all main shows in the season, as well as a priority booking period.

There is also the added benefit of season ticket holders purchasing a ticket to Six by Tenn for a reduced price of £5.
