A fond farewell for a dedicated colleague

-

THE departure of Carol Waterhouse from her role as inpatient unit manager at East Cheshire Hospice marks the end of an era.

Carol has been at the forefront of palliative care for the hospice for 23 years and said her farewells to colleagues last Thursday.

Carol and husband Richard, who is leaving his job in IT in Manchester, are embarking on a new challenge which coincides with daughter Alice starting physiotherapy studies at Birmingham University next month.

Carol, who has spent her career in the nursing profession, is originally from Shropshire and made Macclesfield her home after joining the hospice.

Carol said: “When I arrived I rented the home of the matron at the time so I could find my feet.

“I was blown away by East Cheshire Hospice from the day I arrived and take away wonderful memories of colleagues, patients, their families and all the volunteers.

“It is such a special place and I’m so sad to be leaving but it’s time to do something completely different. Everyone at the hospice does such a great job caring for patients and their families and I’m proud to have been part of such an amazing organisation.”

Carol recalls staging pantomimes for patients, doing a 10k run and walking over hot coals as part of many fundraising initiatives over the years.

Matron Emma Dixon said: “Carol has been the face of East Cheshire Hospice with her passion, enthusiasm, care and compassion for patients, carers and their families.

“She will be hard to replace and I’ve enormous respect for her.

“Carol has been such a huge support and represents the ethos of the hospice.

“We all thank her for her efforts over many years and wish her well for the future.”
