AFC’s mixed start to season
AFTER winning the league and gaining promotion last season, AFC Macclesfield have had a mixed start to their 2016/2017 campaign in League One of The Cheshire League.
On the opening day of the season, they saw off Egerton FC away after a 2-1 victory with goals from Jonny Cavanagh and new signing Jordan Lomas.
Last week they entertained Warrington Town at the SSV, but came out second best against a very strong side.
Cheadle Town were Macclesfield’s visitors last Wednesday night and it was vital for the team to bounce back after the disappointment of the Warrington game.
Macclesfield started quickly putting pressure on the Cheadle’s back four and a goal came within a few minutes of the kick-off.
A well worked team move resulted in Jonny Cavanagh playing in new signing Tom Bowey who went one on one with the opposition keeper. Bowey kept his cool and calmly slotted the ball under the keeper’s legs to make it 1-0.
After the break, Macclesfield continued to press Cheadle and Jack Banister was brought down in the penalty area. Last season’s top goal scorer and captain Greg Mathers stepped up and made it 2-0 from the spot.
Luke Murray made it 3-0 on 70 minutes.
Meanwhile, AFC Macclesfield’s newly-formed reserve team have made a great start to their Cheshire League debut by winning their first two opening games against Wythenshawe Town Development Squad after a 3-0 away win, and a 3-2 win away to Moore United Reserves in Warrington.
The club also want to thank John Bennet for his match ball sponsorship.
