Call to dog owners after pet sheep is killed in field

- STUART GREER

A WOMAN has described the trauma of watching a dog kill one of her pet sheep and seriously injure another.

Lesley Laurence, 66, watched in horror as a dog chased and brought down Raymond the ram.

After driving away the animal Lesley then discovered her sheep Delia was seriously injured.

Delia had to be put down.

Now Lesley is appealing for dog owners to keep their pets under control.

Police are also investigating the attacks.

Lesley, from Broken Cross, said the incident happened on land off Birtles Road, Whirley, on Sunday (January 15).

She said: “It was about 12pm and I happened to be on the land when I heard a dog barking. I didn’t think much of it but it kept barking so I went over.

“I saw a dog running after Raymond and bringing him down, like the way you would see a lion taking down a gazelle. It was horrible.

“Raymond suffered a bite to his face and needed stitches. Delia was so badly injured she was euthanized.”

Mrs Laurence owns the 13 acre field with her husband Geoff.

She said: “Raymond and Delia were my little pet lawnmowers.

“We’ve had them for seven years and didn’t plan to eat them.

“Now Delia is dead and Raymond will have to be rehomed because he cannot be alone.

“It has been very traumatic for us.

“I want dog owners to be aware of this incident. However trained and sensible you think your dog is, as owners you must keep them under control at all times. I would hate for this to happen to anyone else.”

If you can help police call 101, quoting incident 401 on January 15.
