Switch too good to turn down for Lewis
PAUL Lewis admits it is too good an opportunity to turn down after he left Macclesfield Town to sign for Cambridge United.
The 22-year-old midfielder has joined the League Two side for an undisclosed fee after an impressive National League campaign for the Silkmen which saw him score seven goals in 21 games. He came through the youth system at Macc and went on to make a total of 108 appearances, and Lewis is grateful of the time he had at the Moss Rose.
“I’ve been at Macclesfield a number of years and enjoyed my time there, but this is a really good opportunity to come and improve myself,” he said.
“It’s a chance to join a team making good progress and for me to test myself against better quality players. It will be a different environment but one I’m looking forward to playing a part in.
“I’m delighted to make the switch and having looked around the place, it’s a nice city and a really great stadium, so I can’t wait to get started.”
Cambridge head of football operations Ben Strang has watched Lewis on a number of occasions during his time at Macclesfield, and thanked the Silkmen for their co-operation in the deal.
“We’d like to thank Macclesfield, particularly chairman Mark Blower and manager John Askey for their professional approach throughout these dealings,” he said.
“Shaun and the coaching staff are excited by Paul’s potential and look forward to welcoming him into the squad. He is at an excellent age and moment in his career, and has been in a tough league with Macclesfield.
“He brings athleticism, a fantastic mentality and goal scoring ability from midfield. Paul was keen to demonstrate that he can play at a higher level.”
