Elite road police team to star in hit TV series
CHESHIRE police’s elite road team are the stars of a new series of Police Interceptors.
The first episode of the observational documentary series was broadcast on Monday, March 20.
In the series opener PC Tom Spowage tried to stop a suspected petrol thief who was not prepared to pull over.
Meanwhile, PC Mike Jennings helped carry out a textbook ‘tactical pursuit and containment’ (TPAC), and PC Jim Hunt dealt with an abusive drunk.
The new series – on Channel 5 at 8pm – will follow the team for 12 epi- sodes, covering all areas of the county, including Macclesfield.
The series provides a insight into the work by the elite officers in the Cheshire Police Intercept team and reveals what life is like for the people who try and keep our streets safe and crime free.
While officers are set to become local celebrities with their starring role in the TV show, the real stars are the sophisticated weapons used by the county’s road police unit in the war against crime, including high performance cars equipped with number plate recognition systems.
The popular show has run since 2008 covering Essex Police, South Yorkshire Police, Derbyshire Constabulary, Cumbria Constabulary, Lincolnshire Police, Durham Constabulary and Cleveland Police.
Last month viewers were introduced to Cheshire Police’s team with a special episode of Police Interceptors called ‘Smash and Grab’.
Steve Griffiths, from Cheshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Operations Team, said: “Our Interceptor team have been operating professionally with a high level of skill for a number of years, and this work will now be highlighted in the Channel 5 show.
“We work every day to target criminals and bring them to justice and now the public will be able to see how we go about this work and what is involved in the job.”
