Silktown jazz band advises ‘Buy British’

-

OUR nostalgia column brings you fascinating pictures taken in Macclesfield in days gone by. OUR new-look nostalgia picture spread now brings you a wide selection of old photographs each week.

We have teamed up with Macclesfield Library and Cheshire Archives and Local Studies to share old photographs from the archives and will be featuring several different images each week.

Some of our pictures related to Macclesfield Carnival from the early part of the 20th century have thrown up some bizarre images but none more so than the Silktown Prize Jazz Band,

Presumably part of the parade, the band is made up almost entirely of women dressed in striped tunics and holding what appear to be hunting horns played from the sides of their mouths which they also cover with their hands.

Several ladies carry letters which spell the words: ‘Buy British’.

Explore old books, maps and newspapers at Macclesfield Library, Jordangate, SK10 1EE or visit archives.cheshire.gov. uk. We would love to hear your memories relating to any of the pictures we share over our pages.

If you have additional information on the pictures featured today, please contact staff at the Cheshire Image Bank by visiting www. cheshireimagebank.org. uk and clicking on ‘Can you help?’
