Pre-season whetting the appetite

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey is excited about his team’s pre-season schedule after the club announced several friendlies this summer.

The Silkmen currently have four home games pencilled in for the Moss Rose, including a clash against Championship side Derby County.

Macc will host newly promoted League One team Blackpool, along with nearby teams Bury and Crewe Alexandra.

Askey’s men also travel to Edgeley Park for a game against National League North side Stockport County, and the Macclesfield boss is looking forward to the matches.

“They’re all good games for the players to play in. The likes of Derby, Blackpool who’ve just been promoted, Crewe and Bury will all be tough tests,” he told the club’s official website.

“These games also give you a better idea of where the players are up to in preparation for the season including players we have on trial.

“Teams like Derby and Blackpool will bring a lot of supporters which will add to the occasion.”

Macclesfield’s pre-season matches will serve as a good test for the club ahead of the opening league match of the 2017/18 campaign on August 5.

More information on the pre-season matches is available from the Macclesfield Town website.

Meanwhile, youngster Daniel Cowan has thanked Macclesfield Town for all of their support during his time with the club after he wasn’t offered a new deal.

The 20-year-old came through the youth ranks at the Silkmen and went on to make nearly 50 appearances for the team after making his professional debut on the final day of the 2013/14 season.

Cowan will now have to find a new team after being released by Macc, but he is grateful for what he has learned at the club.

Thank you to everyone at Macclesfield Town for the past few years I have spent at the club, it’s time for me to move on and push on with my career,” he said.

“I have really enjoyed my time here and the support that the fans, staff and players have given me has been amazing. We will see very soon where my future lies.”
