Wash out sees Macc pushed out

- CRICKET ROUND-UP

MACCLESFIELD CC 1st XI were meant to be in action away at Widnes CC 1st XI last Saturday, but due to the awful weather and heavy downfalls the game was called off two hours before the intended start time.

Macc’s promotion rivals, Marple played and won however, which means they move up to second, pushing Macc 16 points outside of the promotion places with one game to go.

That game is this Saturday down at Victoria Road, 12.30pm start, sponsored by Tom Burden Sports Massage and Rehabilitation, and is now a must win for Macc.

Langley 1st XI had their match away at Cholmondeley cancelled on Saturday with rain flooding the ground, they look set to finish the season in third place, with just a home encounter with the Wirral left to play.

Langley 2nd xi also had their home clash with champions Cholmondeley abandoned.

They remain in second place, 13 points ahead of Aston, they travel to Mossley with 13 points needed to secure promotion.

On Sunday Langley 1st xi suffered heartache when they were defeated by a strong Congleton side in the semi final of the plate cup.

Congleton elected to bat and cruised to 80-1 off 10 overs, the Langley bowlers pulled things back and restricted Congleton to 135-5 off 20 overs.

Skipper Dave Cowen 2-10 off two overs, Si Patterson 2-28 off 4 overs and David Frame 1-18 off 4 overs were the stand out bowlers.

In reply, Langley lost Sunny Malik 0 in the first over, however Chris Pattison and Pat Horgan took Langley to 65-1 off 8 overs.

Langley then fell apart as they were dismissed for 107 in 16.5 overs.

Pattison top scored with 44 and Horgan made 26.

A disappointing end to a good cup run from the Langley boys.

Saturdays game away to Mossley was unfortunately abandoned without any play due to the heavy rain of Friday and that forecast on the day.

It leaves just one game to play in the 2017 season, this weekend when Saughall travel to Clark Lane.

Match starting at 1pm

In the Cheshire Women’s Cricket League, Chester’s hopes of a treble, and of retaining their league title, slipped away as Didsbury came out on top.

It was their first defeat in the league since April, and also ended a 14-match winning run across all competitions.

Rosh Navaratnam bowled a tight spell and Hannah Marshall took crucial wickets, but it was once again Hannah Jones who played the main role in restricting the scoring rate during Chester’s innings, as the Lancashire spinner sent down six overs for only two runs.

The win lifted Didsbury to third place.

With Chester slipping up, it was Oakmere who clinched their first title since 2014 – Dawn Prestidge and Raffaella Rodighiero’s partnership seeing them home here.

Having started the day 11 points adrift, Oakmere ended it eight points ahead.

Appleton’s run of seven successive top two finishes ended as they were forced to settle for fourth place.

Oakmere’s title win means that no club has retained the Championship since Appleton in 2012.

It also means that while Chester’s dreams of the treble were dashed, one player is celebrating a personal treble, as Prestidge is a member of Oakmere’s League squad, and also of the Chester T20 squad that won the Knockout Cup and the Divisional Competition in the shorter form of the game.
