Downpour run crowned ‘lifesaving’ £2k fundraiser
THE TEAM at a community leisure centre have raised money for a piece of lifesaving equipment.
Volunteers and staff at Bollington Health and Leisure have taken part in a number of fundraising activities to raise £2,000 for a pool extraction board.
The board can be a lifesaving piece of kit when used in emergencies.
It allows staff to get swimmers who may have suffered a spinal injury out of the pool quickly and safely.
The leisure centre is run as a charity for the benefit of the community so the team needs to raise money to buy extra equipment and provide services.
So they set about a variety of fundraising activities to fund extraction board.
As well as this, they have also been able to raise enough money to purchase new camping equipment for 12th Stockport scout group (Brinnington).
Tom Horsefield, from Bollington Health and Leisure, said: “We’re really pleased to have been able to raise enough money for the board.
“It will be a valuable and vital piece of lifesaving equipment allowing the safe and quick extraction of casualties with suspected spinal injuries from the swimming pool.”
As part of the fundraising, last month two enthusiastic members of staff, Liz Mirrlees and Ben Mattinson, set off on an epic 36-mile run across the craggy hills of the Cheshire countryside.
Heading out from the starting point at the lei- the sure centre, Liz and Ben faced the full wrath of the weather from the very beginning, experiencing torrential downpours and episodes of hailstorms with some paths turning into rivers.
Their route took them along the Gritstone Trail to Disley, then onto Whaley Bridge, over to Buxton, to Macclesfield Forest and finally back to Bollington.
Conquering an impressive 5,000ft of elevation and burning 6,000 calories their eight months of training paid off with them finishing the challenge in 11 hours and 50 minutes.
Tom said: “Liz, Ben and the whole team at Bollington would like to thank all the generous donations, kind words and support we have received.
“The centre would also like to thank The Poachers Inn in Bollington who hosted a pub quiz and raffle earlier this year which raised more than £250 and went towards the purchase of the pool extraction board.”
