Cross country results a high point at end of successful season

-

MACCLESFIELD Harriers and Athletics Club ended the cross country season with some excellent results in both individual and team, making this one of their most successful seasons ever.

With more than 100 runners competing from under 11s to veterans over 80, the club has competed and collected awards from two different cross country leagues and multiple championships.

The highlight of the season was the English National Cross Country Championships at which Sian Heslop became under 15 National Cross Country Champion.

Finley Proffitt also secured a top 10 position in the under 15 boys’ race and Louisa Whittingham continued the club’s top 10 performances to finish in an outstanding 8th position in the very competitive junior women’s race.

The Harriers also produced some top results in the North Staffs League. There were individual medals for Finley Proffitt (winner, U15), Sarah Stockman (winner in both junior and senior women) and Hanny Stockman (second, veterans over 50).

Matthew Browne, Rebecca Dilworth, Chris Goodfellow, Andy Lamont, Robbie Peal, Lauren Robinson and Ruby Spencer all took third place overall in their age categories.

There was team victory for the U15 boys who won their series overall, while the U13 boys finished second and the U13 girls and senior men’s teams both finished third.

It was a family affair in the North Staffs League with Rachel Browne, Nina Proffitt and Hanny Stockman, who all had sons or daughters winning in the junior series, contributing to an excellent fourth place for the women’s senior team. Chris Goodfellow, who contributed to the senior men’s team success and took third place in his age category, is joined at races by sons Philip and Peter.

In the Manchester League Finley Proffitt again won his age group and Hanny Stockman again took second place in the veterans’ category, while Lauren Robinson was third overall in U17 girls.

The U15 boys’ team finished second and the U13 boys took third while the men’s veterans finished second in their division.

In the Cheshire Championships the U13 boys won their team competition, with Ben Hamilton-Ryan leading the team in 2nd place.

The under 15 boys also won their team competition, with Finley Proffitt winning that race. Sarah Stockman won the U20 ladies race, with Louisa Whittingham in 2nd place.

In the Northern Championships there was gold for Sian Heslop in the U15 girls race and bronze for Finley Proffitt in the U15 boys.
