Macc on track for promotion

- ATHLETICS GILLIAN LINDSEY

AS the heatwave continued on another beautifully sunny day, Macclesfield Harriers & Athletic Club were pushing ever harder for promotion in the Northern Track and Field League.

Having made a strong start to the season by winning the first League match in May, hopes were high for the third match in this series of four.

Competing on their home turf at Macclesfield athletics track the combined Seniors/ U17s mens’ team managed to field athletes in every discipline.

Special mention to Dave Larkin who took on the 3000m steeplechase following some last-minute hurdles practice. It was great to see Dave taking full advantage of the water jump to keep himself cool in the blistering heat.

Dave commented: “The steeplechase is not something I have ever considered trying before but it was great fun! It was great to try something new. The race was won by a talented Macc Harrier Rob Finnis who glided over the barriers showing us all how it is meant to be done.”

Rob Finnis also helped the mens’ 4x400m team to take gold in this event.

Provisional results show that Macclesfield won over an ever strong travelling Crewe and Nantwich team.

If they can keep this momentum going and field an equally strong team in Wrexham on 4 August, promotion to the next division is a very real prospect.
