Breathing room at top for Kerridge

-

AS the long dry spell finally broke last week with a day of rain prior to the Saturday, Kerridge CC were not in the mood to let this dampen their spirits.

Kerridge welcomed Prestbury 2nd XI to Clarke Lane and with winning becoming a habit were hoping to create some daylight at the top of the table.

Kerridge lost the toss and Prestbury chose to bat, a decision that seemed an easy one to make on a blisteringly hot day. Kerridge’s bowlers set about the task of restricting the score with zeal and scoring progressed at a very slow pace throughout Prestbury’s innings.

Only one wicket fell in the opening 18 overs but only 32 runs were scored.

The scoring rate hardly improved and wickets began to fall as Alex Grimes and Danny Brown were introduced.

Dan finished with figures of 35 for 2 from his 14 overs and Alex grabbed another five for, with figures of 30 for 5 from 13 overs.

Prestbury closed on 99 for 8 from their 45 overs, a low total that an in form Kerridge felt confident of chasing. Danny Brown and Alan Harbige opened the batting for Kerridge and put on 99 runs for the opening wicket finishing one run short of a ten wicket victory. Danny batted with authority and increasing fluency to finish on 67 not out while Alan made a patient 25 with both building on their recent good form. Kerridge finished on 100 for 1; a comprehensive nine-wicket victory.

Heaton Mersey Village visit Kerridge next week with the home team hoping to avenge one of only two defeats this season.

Kerridge welcomed their dual shirt sponsors for the season to join in with a team photo. A club spokesman said: “The club wishes pass on their most sincere thank you to Barrows Butchers and The Lord Clyde pub for their generous support. Thanks also to this weeks ball sponsor Mr and Mrs P Leigh.”
