Sally Army gets facelift

- ALEX SCAPENS

ACHARITY’S Grade II listed headquarters is to be reno- vated.

The Salvation Army’s base on Roe Street, Macclesfield, is 189 years old and will be undergoing refurbishment over the next couple of months.

Work will include the replacement of all windows and remedial work to the roof and external walls. Preparatory work began last week.

The project will mean some disruption to the Salvation Army’s activities. nMajor Gareth Dickens, corps officer at the Salvation Army, said: “We’re very sorry for the inconvenience these works will cause.

“But they are necessary to allow activities by the Salvation Army and other groups who use the Hall to continue for many years to come.

“Although we won’t have the hall open during the week for several weeks contact can still be made via email.”

Because of the renovations the Wellington Street car park will pedestrian access only from Monday, November 12. The car park on Churchill Way can be used instead.

There will be no access from Roe Street while the works take place, instead it will be from Wellington Street. And midweek activities will cease from Monday, November 19, until Tuesday, January 8.

But Sunday worship services will continue at 10.30am as normal throughout this period, including December 23 when there will be a family carol service at 10.30am and carols by candlelight at 6pm.

Donations of clothes and bedding cannot be accepted from Friday, November 9, until the end of January.

Any food donations can still be made by contacting Major Dickens at gareth. dickens@ salvationarmy.org.uk or on 01625 429903.

One event that will still take place at the Roe Street headquarters is the annual autumn fair on Saturday, November 17, from 10am to 1pm.

It will have stalls including toys, gifts, cake, bric-abrac and sweets.

Refreshments will be available and funds raised will help support the Salvation Army’s work.
