Thousands turn out to honour war heroes

- BY ALEX SCAPENS

THOUSANDS of people lined the streets to pay their respects as Macclesfield honoured fallen heroes on the most special of Remembrance Days.

The town came to a standstill at 11am on Sunday, November 11, and a two-minute silence was observed at the cenotaph at Park Green.

Around 3,000 were at the service and 1,000 in a parade that had come from the town hall and then returned after the silence and wreath laying.

Councillor Adam Schofield, Mayor of Macclesfield, took the salute from the procession at the town hall.

He said: “I was delighted to see such a huge attendance at this year’s remembrance day service and I received some very positive comments about the big screen that the town council provided for this special centenary commemoration.

“I would like to thank all of the volunteer marshals and the many, many, people who came to pay their respects, making our service such a fitting tribute to those we remembered and to whom we owe our freedom to.”

The day marked 100 years since the end of World War I and the signing of the Armistice.

The Macclesfield Royal British Legion, parade marshal Peter Lake, the clergy who led the service have also been thanked.

Other events took place in the area including a parade to the memorial gardens in Bollington, where there was a service.

In Gawsworth churches, schoolchildren, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, the Girls Brigade and residents paraded to the Church Lane War Memorial.

Other commemorations took place in Prestbury, Poynton, Disley and at a host of schools during the week leading up to Remembrance Day.
