Town wins silver for flowers at first time of asking

- ALEX SCAPENS

IT may be autumn and the flowers fading but the Macclesfield in Bloom team is celebrating an award for its hard work.

At an awards ceremony Macclesfield was given a silver medal for its floral displays in the large town or small city category.

The town council has spent the last couple of years improving the flower displays and entered the Britain in Bloom competition for the first time in 2018.

And despite being against a host of larger areas the team was awarded a silver at the north west ceremony in Southport.

Pete Turner, Macclesfield’s town clerk, said: “It’s a huge well done to all the volunteers and support team around the town who have all contributed and built on work done in previous years.

“Last year’s displays were so popular and successful we decided to enter the Britain in Bloom competition, but as it was our first year we only expected some helpful advice from the judges to help us improve towards an award in future years.

“The judges don’t just look at the displays, but also, local information, year round work and how involved the community is.

“And I think it was this last aspect that really helped us to win a silver medal.

“We have volunteers who have worked for years to try and add colour and life to the town as well as more recent recruits.

“There are also volunteers who pick up litter too and this all helps.”

Macclesfield Town Council took over responsibility for the floral displays from Cheshire East Council in 2016.

Anyone interested in becoming part of the team of volunteers responsible can contact the town council on 01625 374142 or via its website.
