Signing players is only option

-

NEIL Howarth says he is at the lowest he has ever been in his football career – and has stressed his Macclesfield Town side desperately need to sign players in order to give themselves a chance of turning their season around.

The Silkmen’s terrible campaign hit another low on Saturday after they were beaten 2-1 at National League side Maidstone United in the first round of the FA Cup.

Ben Stephens had given the visitors the lead, but second half goals from Jack Powell and Blair Turgott saw Maidstone come from behind and knock Macclesfield out of the competition.

Howarth was furious with what he saw in the game, and has made it clear what needs to happen if they are to have any hope of getting back on track.

“We’ve got to hit rockbottom to take a step back. I think we have, this is as low as I’ve ever been in my footballing career. When you do finally hit rockbottom, there’s only one way to go,” he said.

“We need players, we need to get some available players in before January, if possible. There’s not many of them about, not many of them that are unattached, not many that we can afford, not many that are fit and ready to come into the team, but we have to try and get players in quickly.

“Then in January, we have to reassess and make decisions on players, who are showing at the moment, that they’re not League Two standard.

“It’s going to be a rough few days, but there’s only one way to get over things like this. You can’t sit and feel sorry for yourself and lick your wounds.

“I’m certainly not going to come out all bouncing and saying that everything is going to be okay because I’d just be talking rubbish. There’s a way and a formula to get the best out of these lads, we’ve been close a few times.

“We get it for periods in matches and then if we cut out individual mistakes, we’d have a lot more points and we’d still be in a cup competition.”

Macclesfield were set to return to action as the Express went to print on Tuesday, hosting West Brom U21 at the Moss Rose in the EFL Trophy. They’re then back in league action this weekend, as they face a difficult trip to second placed MK Dons.
