Fountain Street:

Today it runs from Green Street to Hallefield Road, but in the past there have been three other Fountain Streets.

There was the Fountain Street which is now Coronation Street, it was a former name of Station Street, and it was the name of a part of Pierce Street. Castle Street:

This street opened in 1923, and took its name from the castellate­d mansion of John de Macclesfie­ld, built around 1380.

The shop which until recently was a branch of Mothercare stands on part of the site. But there may have been an earlier Norman castle, in the area of Rodney Street, Nelson Street and Vincent Street.

The area was known as Castle Fields, and when Vincent Street was built in the 1820s, part of it was called Castle Street. Wilwick Lane:

A lane on the Weston Estate. The name was approved by the Highways Committee in 1946, but the name is medieval.

It is connected with the management of Macclesfie­ld Forest, and referred to a settlement (Wick) near a trap to catch animals (a wil). Name changes:

Nearly 100 streets have had their names changed, usually to avoid duplicatio­n. When the Highways Committee decided to change the name of Fountain Street, Sutton, to The Broadway, the residents refused.
