Strugglers go toe to toe at Peterborough

- CLUBMAN COLUMN

SADLY another loss to report again on Saturday when old rivals Tynedale travelled down to Priory Park from the North East and returned with the five points.

The defeat leaves the Blues second bottom of Two North, three points above bottom side Peterborough Lions where we travel to on Saturday for our first ever (in my knowledge) game between the clubs.

Directions later but kick off at Peterborough is shown as 2.15pm so allow good time for travel.

Peterborough themselves went down at Preston Grasshoppers whilst South Leicester are now eight points above us in third from bottom spot after gaining a bonus point in defeat at Fylde so it is vital that we get the points on offer when the squad make the trip to Cambridgeshire come Saturday with the season now over a third of the way through.

Match report for the 1st XV elsewhere on this page but results from around the club on Saturday sadly were not much to write home about with the Second XV losing out in a high scoring game over at Sedgley Park and the 3rd team also losing out at Priory Park to Blackburn Seconds.

However, the 4th team recorded a very good 22-7 victory over at Whitchurch against the home sides 3rd team so not all bad news.

Around Two North on Saturday top dogs and already looking good for promotion to National One Hull Ionians won a tough encounter at Sedgley Park 35-28 and stand four points above second placed Chester who won another high scoring game 28-25 at home to Wharfedale and along with Huddersfield in third place beating Stourbridge over in West Yorkshire in yet another close game 15-10.

There was victory for Otley who beat Hinckley and at Leicester Lions the home side drew 18 all with Sheffield Tigers to complete the weekend so it’s all hands to the deck for Saturday in the hope of some important points.

Yet more Autumn Internationals on offer last weekend with England taking the honours at HQ against a game Japan XV after a fraught start but highlight for me of Saturday was Irelands excellent victory over New Zealand in Dublin where, I have no doubt, much Guinness was supped on Saturday evening!

I firmly believe that the boys in green will be the ones to stop for any side who wants to win the upcoming Six Nations come 2019. Watch this space.

In the other games Australia easily beat Italy who still have to really find their ‘rugby feet’ and France beat Argentina while Wales beat Tonga in a game where the two sides contrived to score 98 points between them to send the home sides fans home singing hymns and arias.

For those travelling on Saturday to Peterborough they play at ‘Flaxlands’ Bretton Woods, Peterborough PE3 8DF which from my Tythy base is some 114 miles so allow a good three hours for travel bearing in mind that kick off will be 2.15pm according to The Rugby Paper.

With travelling to and from Carnforth on Sunday this is a somewhat truncated ‘Clubman’ but hopefully back to normal next week. Saturday’s games: 1st v Peterborough Lions – Away – 2.15.pm. 2nd v Fylde Hawks – Home 3rd v Waterloo 2 – Away 4th v Oswestry 2 – Home That’s it for now – enjoy your Rugby – I do.
