IT may be a month to the day itself but the festive season is about to get into full swing with a host of Christmas lights events.

The big switch-on in Macclesfield town centre takes place on Saturday, December 1, from midday.

Poynton’s Christmas Fest will be held on Tuesday, December 4, from 7pm to 9pm with Park Lane closed to traffic.

At the Macclesfield switch-on there will be bands providing musical entertainment, Christmas market stalls, a craft fair and a firework display following the switch on at 5pm.

Other attractions include face painting, children’s entertainment, carol singers and a chance to visit Santa Claus in his grotto.

Helena Gowler, community engagement officer for Macclesfield Town Council, said: “We have added a few extra festive treats into this year’s switch on event.

“These include the Santa’s grotto which will be in the town hall for the first time and Victorian carol singers who will be entertaining people all around the town centre.

“We hope that lots of people join us to welcome the Christmas season to Macclesfield and of course to see the lights switched on.”

At the Christmas Fest there will also be a firework show as well as a stage in the Farmers Arms car park hosting music and entertainment throughout the evening.

There will be school bands, carol singing, choirs and a visit from Santa with shops on Park Lane staying open late and food and drink served.

Chris Myers, from the organising team, said: “What more could better ignite the festive season?

“Christmas Fest has often been quoted as the start of Christmas, come meet your friends, neighbours and the wider Poynton community.”

There is also a Christmas lights switch and celebration in Disley on Friday, December 7, from 6.30pm.

It will be held on the Ram Green and feature Christmas music, street entertainers, a tea cup ride and a visit from Santa on his sleigh.

The lights will be turned on at 7pm and there will fireworks and a Christmas market.

Bollington has already held its switch on event, which took place on Sunday, November 25

There was a Santa’s grotto, elves, stalls, a barbecue, a fairground and visit from a vintage fire engine.
