Wrong decision against Connor

- BOXING

CONNOR Chalcroft was in action recently as he made his debut for Macclesfield Boys’ Boxing Club on a show taking place in Bolton.

Chalcroft only took the bout with 24 hours notice, and his opponent was Kyle Smith from the host club. The home crowd was quite hostile but Chalcroft wasn’t the slightest bit fazed and was raring to go.

They touched gloves and it felt like everyone in the room was shouting for Smith, who was taller and more rangier than Chalcroft.

Smith wanted it long, but Chalcroft wanted it in the pocket and soaked up the shots as he pushed forward.

Round one was the home fighter’s round, but in the second round Chalcroft’s fitness started to shine through as he got closer, landing some decent shots that you could see Smith wasn’t liking.

They went toe to toe at one point which was a mistake by Smith as it was playing into Chalcroft’s hands as he opened up, so this round was Chalcroft’s by far.

In round three, Chalcroft was told to turn it up, and he obliged straight away by putting a full barrage of punches on Smith who was just looking more and more tired.

Chalcroft took control of the bout and he was catching his opponent from all angles as Smith tried to tie him up at every opportunity, but Chalcroft just shrugged him off and went back to work.

Round three seemed to be in the bag and surely the win would come, but controversially the win went to Smith on a split decision.

Smith was first to admit Connor should have got the decision and everyone who spoke to Chalcroft afterwards said the same. Chalcroft wasn’t bothered as he loved every minute of it and is raring to go for the next one.
