Coates schools Midlands champ

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club’s father and son duo Dan and Sam Coates were on the road again, this time with top coach Sean White overseeing proceedings.

Sam was up against Carl Gater from Tom Lowe ABC in the Midlands, bout eight of the evening.

As they climbed through the ropes, the MBBC contingent noticed Gater wearing a Midlands Champion vest, so they knew this was going to be no push over.

With the crowd behind him, Gater looked formidable.

Round one saw both lads taking it steady, Coates settling to a nice boxing mode, picking shots and taking his time.

Gater was also cautious with both putting on a display of technical boxing for the crowd, who were very much behind Gater.

It was an even first round that could have gone either way.

Round two and Coates had been told to throw caution to the wind and turn it up a bit, more pressure fighting which he obliged straight away by being on top of Gater from the off.

Gater was now struggling with the intensity of Coates throwing shot after shot and Coates caught him with solid shot. The referee had no option but to give Gater a standing eight count.

Towards the end of the second, Coates pulled off the throttle a bit so Gater could see the end of the round out.

Round three was pretty much the same with Coates dominating the proceedings with his constant work rate. Gater was covering up more now and was feeling the strain of the constant barrage of shots going his way.

The final bell rang and by the now Coates had silenced the crowd having just schooled their Midlands champion, taking the decision on a unanimous points win Coates was triumphant yet again.
