Trains rerouted as lorry hits bridge

-

TRAINS were diverted after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge near Macclesfield station.

Police were called to Waters Green, in the town centre, on Wednesday, December 19, at around 1.20pm following the accident.

Traffic disruption was kept to a minimum but Virgin Train services that called at Macclesfield were diverted on other lines while the incident was dealt with.

These were trains that left Manchester Piccadilly at 35 minutes past the hour and those that left London Euston on the hour.

By 3pm the line had been reopened and was running with a delay that cleared later the same day.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: “Shortly after 1.20pm we were called to the line close to Macclesfield train station following reports of a vehicle striking a bridge.

“Engineers from Network Rail have also been called to make an assessment.”

No injuries were reported as being caused in the incident.
