Sol won’t read much into Magpies’ drubbing

MACCLESFIELD Town take on Notts County today (Boxing Day) – but manager Sol Campbell insists his side won’t be taking anything from County’s 4-0 defeat to Grimsby Town in their last game.

It was a heavy defeat for the Magpies in their last match, as two goals from Harry Davis along with strikes from Harry Clifton and Wes Thomas earned Grimsby the dominant victory.

It means that the Magpies are second from bottom in the table, just two points above Macclesfield, so a victory for Campbell’s men would see them leapfrog their opponents in the table.

It would be the first time in a considerable amount of time that Macc are off the foot of the table, but the Silkmen manager says the team won’t be looking back at the previous week’s results.

“You have to look at every game differently. I’ve never been that type of player to care about what happens in a previous game,” he said.

“You’ve just got to apply yourself in the proper way and prepare in the right way. You can lose 4-0 one week and then win 2-0, so we just have to take the game totally serious and be ready for anything.”

The match with Notts County at Meadow Lane comes 24 hours after Christmas Day, and Campbell has revealed that he’s given the players some time off ahead of the fixture.

“I’ve given the lads Christmas Day off and it’s good for them to get a bit of space and enjoy Christmas with their families which is very important,” he said.

“I’ll be with my family as well and then I’ve got to get back on it.

“That’s just how football goes. The lads will enjoy the games over Christmas and we’ve got to be focused.”

The fixture also sees Campbell return to Notts County having spent an extremely brief period there as a player back in 2009.

Campbell made one appearance for Notts County after the team had been the subject of a takeover by Middle Eastern consortium, but he later cancelled his contract by mutual consent around a month after arriving.
