Hunt for gang after Co-op raid

- ALEX SCAPENS

POLICE are hunting a gang of men who blew up a cash machine during a bank raid in Macclesfield town centre.

It is believed the group of three or four escaped with a large amount of money following the raid at the Co-operative Bank, on Castle Street, on Saturday night.

According to officers a grey Ford Focus sports model stopped outside the building at around 11.50pm and men dressed in dark clothing got out.

They then used gas to blow up the ATM – causing a loud explosion – and managed to get inside the bank.

Following the raid the thieves drove off in the car towards Churchill Way.

Police have launched an investigation and appealed for witnesses as well as daschcam footage.

Detective Sergeant Angela Coppock, from Macclesfield CID, said: “This was a serious incident and we are committed to doing all that we can to trace the people responsible and bring them to justice.

“The investigation is currently ongoing and we’re following a number of lines of enquiry, including CCTV and forensics.

“As part of the investigation I’m keen to hear from anyone with any information about the incident. I’m particularly keen to locate two members of the public who we’re seen in the vicinity of the bank immediately prior to the incident.

“I’d also like to hear from anyone who believes they have any dashcam footage of the grey Ford Focus, which is believed to have travelled around the town centre between 11.40pm and 11.59pm.”
