Foodie Friday team keen to go green

-

ORGANISERS of the town’s new ‘Foodie Friday’ event hope to bring great food to the town centre, while also cutting down on waste.

Hosted by Artisan Cheshire, the monthly event will bring a wide range of food stalls into the town centre on the first Friday of the month between now and December.

Festival Director Lindsey Conner said they were also hoping to encourage environmentally friendly practices from both their traders and customers.

This includes stopping the sale of plastic water bottles and the use of styrofoam, plastic bags and plastic forks and using compostable pint glasses made from a plant starch.

Lindsey said: “It’s something that we have been quite passionate about for a while in our home lives. We were looking at what choices our traders were making and we were getting asked by them how can we reduce plastic so we are actually putting information forward.

“I think they will have a massive impact.

“Everybody is a lot more environmentally conscious so we are seeing a shift in the way that people are shopping now.

“It makes sense when you look back at how things used to be with getting milk delivered and taking pots back to the shop. We are getting back to the good old days.”

Other iniatitives involve not using any chemicals in their toilets and giving out sustainability awards to stall owners.

The next Macclesfield Foodie Friday is on June 7 from 10am-9pm, followed by the annual Macclesfield Food Festival on Saturday 8th June 10am-7pm.

Coinciding with the Queen’s birthday, the Macc Food Fest will be royally themed with a ‘Design A Crown’ competition, a performance from the Cheshire Drums and Bugles and a cookery demonstration from celebrity chef Nigel Brown.
