Festival serves up 13,000 pints of good cheer to beer lovers

- ALEX SCAPENS

THOUSANDS of people raised a glass to toast the 25th annual Macclesfield Beer Festival.

Organisers of the event, at Macclesfield Rugby Club, say around 4,000 visited over Friday, May 10, and Saturday, May 11.

A total of 13,000 pints of beer were drunk as well as 1,270 of cider or perrie and 36 bottles from the gin bar.

And of course the festival was raising money for charity - with this year’s beneficiaries Cheshire Search and Rescue to the tune of an estimated £34,000.

The money will be used to fund light-weight portable defibrillators, cold weather gear and radio equipment.

Ben Whiteley, one of the festival organisers, said: “It was very successful, at the evening

sessions there were lots of people in the marquee enjoying themselves.

“There was a really fun atmosphere, it was like a great big party with fantastic beer.”

Musical entertainment was provided throughout with and revellers were able to take away a special 25th anniversary souvenir glass.

The gin bar, which had appeared at the festival for the first time last year, was again a hit. One of the surprise successes was a glittery candyfloss flavoured gin.

While the Friday and Saturday night sessions continued up to midnight, the Saturday afternoon had family entertainment and facepainting.

Planning for next year’s event will begin in just a couple of weeks.

Volunteers who helped this year and Macclesfield Round Table, one of the major helps, have both been thanked.

Ben added: “We are already thinking about next year, in a couple of weeks time we will have a meeting.”
