MBBC answer Beartown call

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club received a phone call from Beartown ABC last week, who were struggling to get bouts for their annual show with late let downs and injuries.

Always happy to help out their neighbours in Congleton, MBBC stepped in and made a few more bouts.

First up was Tom “The Cheshire Bomber” Richardson in his second contest against an older and more experienced kid from Hamer ABC, Charlie Braddock.

This kid was good and straight away set about trying to push Tom back with a barrage of shots.

Unperturbed, Tom covered up and then went to work himself slipping, bobbing and weaving then throwing his own shots. This was an all action non-stop contest with both kids giving their all but in round three Tom found his range and his feet were firmly set as he delivered a cracking right hand over the top that just caught Charlie clean on the button. The ref intervened and a standing eight count was given.

Tom Richardson took the unanimous victory over a very good strong opponent.

Bout two and a third

bout in as many weeks for young Harrison Szmit, taking on Ben Braddock from Hamer ABC, Charlie’s older brother.

This was another fabulous contest, again both kids putting it all on the line.

Ben, taller with more reach, pushed on in his southpaw stance. Harry covered up well and did aas he was told and came back every time with a lead backhand and a left hook catching as often as he threw it.

It was a great contest and the MBBC team were proud of Harry who carried on right to the end and never gave up as Ben Braddock from Hamer took the win in another scorcher.

Next up, Tommy Cowan against a boxer from the Holyhead and Angelsey gym, Mason Childes, a short stocky kid who was as game as they come.

From the off he was trying to put his head on Tom’s chest and work on the inside and with a southpaw stance young Tommy was struggling at first to find his range, becoming more entangled and scrappy.

But once Tommy started get his shots off he was catching with some beauties, much to the crowd’s delight.

Round two saw Tommy listen to instructions and start to create some distance between themselves so he could get his shots off. He seemed to settle a bit more and look more comfortable, but Mason was no push over and he wasn’t stopping and came back at every opportunity.

The third round was by far Tom’s best as he landed some good shots and as is usually the case one of them hit the button, a standing eight count was administered to give time for Mason to recover.

Tommy turned it up a gear before the final bell rang – another decent bout over and another win for MBBC.

The last contest of the night for MBBC was a senior contest of three threeminute rounds, the only one of the night.

As a coach you sometimes wonder if the opponent might be too much of a step up for your boxer and tonight was just one off those occasions as Scott Attward at 18 years of age was taking on a 28 year old with an outstanding record of 14 wins and only four losses, a regional champion and national level participant Tom Reed from a very good club Northside ABC in Manchester.

Having watched a couple of clips on YouTube of Tom in some cracking bouts that he won, we knew he was going to be a good strong opponent but Scott wasn’t worried and took the test in his stride.

They touched gloves and away they went with Tommy playing right in to Scotty’s hands, lunging forward with solid punches and Scotty slipping and evading then coming back with some superb counters, scoring all the time.

Tom was a man and the shots didn’t hurt him but the flurries were intense at times and made Scott look better on the night.

Round two and much of the same – Tom wanted to stand and trade but the instruction was to hit and move which Scotty did until he started to tire a bit then he started to stand and trade which is a worry for the coaches as inevitably your boxer may get caught.

But Scott’s head movement ensured it wasn’t him and he had just as much success at close range as long range.

Round three and with firm instruction not to stand and trade, Scott tried his best to keep to his boxing which he did for the first part but inevitably again and much to the pleasure of those watching he went toe to toe again.

As the last ten seconds of round three sounded Scott released a barrage of fast shots, smothering Tom and as the bell rang it was clear there was only one winner – Scott Attward, who had taken on his toughest test yet and come threw it triumphantly with a unanimous points win against top class opponent.

An excellent night off amatuer boxing at a great venue, Congleton Town Hall only £10 a ticket 13 contests – great value for money and quality boxing through out well done Beartown ABC for a cracking night.
