Late draft Kath in Ringway triumph

RINGWAY Golf Club were excellent hosts for the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Associatio­n’s medal competitio­n for the Doris Chambers Salver, providing excellent weather, a fine and challengin­g course and friendly hospitalit­y.

Doris Chambers was a true legend of Cheshire ladies for many years and there are two competitio­ns each year in her memory playing for the Salver and the Doris Chambers Cup that will be held at Delamere Forest GC later in the season.

Tytheringt­on stalwart Kath Lees was drafted into the competitio­n as a late substitute for a fellow club member and was delighted to be able to take part.

She certainly exceeded her wildest expectatio­ns as she posted a fine 92-2072 card to lead in by four shots from Alison Grant (Royal Liverpool) and Susan Oldham (Sale).

The best gross of 80 came from Cheshire Captain Dr Jeanne Bell (Royal Liverpool), who plays off one handicap.

Jeanne presented the trophy to Kath who said: “It was a lovely day and a really well organised event on a great course with lovely hospitalit­y afterwards and I am

delighted to be the second lady from Tytheringt­on to win such a prestigiou­s trophy.”

A singles Stableford at Alderley Edge was won by Paul Penney with 40 points, one more than Andy Slater and Richard Stewart.

The Thursday Stableford at Edge was led in by Simon Allen with 20 points.

Edge’s ladies played an EWGA medal and Wendy Rule won with a nett 76.

Midweek Stableford action at Avro had Barney Connor winning a cpo on 34 points from Stephen Callaghan, two more than Neil Flood.

Bob Collins also won a cpo on 37 points from Bob Holt and two more than Ian Anderson in the Seniors Charity Stableford at Avro.

Macclesfie­ld ladies played two competitio­ns and in the Umbro Cup qualifier, sponsored by Val Fox Joyce Riley won from Myra Clarke and Hilary Elsworth with Wendy Higgins having the best gross.

In a singles Stableford Pat Burrows led in after a cpo on 29 points with Joyce Riley, one more than Wendy Higgins.

The monthly medal for Macc’s men was led in by Pete Holmes with 67 from Nigel Heathcote 68 and Mark Harbord and Alan Arden, both 69.

A singles Stableford at Davenport was won by Steffan Sullivan with 41 points from Michael O’Boyle 39 and Denis Hall and Peter Lea, both 38.

A medal for Davenport ladies had the divisions led in by Pam Garlick 70, Liz Southern 74 and Patricia Hopwood with a bestof-the-day 68.

A medal at Mottram Hall was won by Dom Hadfield with 76, six shots clear of Nigel Woods.

The Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall had a clear winner in Gill Kershaw with 40 points, three more than George Bresnahan, Peter Duffy and Peter Whitehurst. Saturday medal action at Styal had club legend Harry Reid showing his class with 81 to finish ahead of Jeffrey Chadwick and Olivier Baker, both 83.

Harry made it a double as he won a cpo on 38 points to win a Seniors Stableford from Mervyn Stephenson.
