Sylk dance academy cut from same cloth

- ALEX SCAPENS

ADANCE school that was started as a hobby has now grown into a thriving business and celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Amy Mayers set up Sylk Dance Academy, in Macclesfield, in 2009 with her friend Becky Anderson, who moved on a short time later.

It had always been a dream of hers and the reality has grown into a success story with Amy now having 250 pupils at her classes.

The academy is based on Union Road and she

has classes at other locations across Macclesfield as well as having expanded into Congleton.

Amy, 32, of Mill Street, said: “It is something I had always wanted to do. Even in the year book at Fallibroome Academy I wrote that this was what I was going to do.

“There’s a lot more to it than I thought, there’s working with people, a lot of admin so it’s not all dancing and having fun.

“The parents and children are a big part of it, it’s like having a big family and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else now.

“It is all much better than I expected and I have achieved above what I imagined, it started as a hobby while I had other jobs.”

After leaving Fallibroome, Amy studied dance and marketing at university.

When the dance school opened it had just four classes running out of Broken Cross Social Club.

Some of her former pupils now work at Sylk Academy as dance teachers. Students also appear in competitions including the British Championships.

And Amy’s dancers were invited to perform at the Silverstone Formula One Grand Prix last year.

She said: “It is unbelievable to look back on how far we have come but exciting to think how far we might go.

“I would like to thank my amazing teachers, staff and parents and of course dancers for making Sylk what it is today.”

Julia Wild, whose daughter Olivia, 15, joined the academy nine years ago, added: “It is about being with others who have the same interests, keeping active, being kind to others and learning self-confidence, along with a few funky moves.”
