£45,000 scheme will help homes power up

- ALEX SCAPENS

ENGINEERS will carry out a £45,000 project to upgrade part of the power network that supplies 156 homes in an area of Macclesfield.

The Electricity North West work begins in Higher Hurdsfield on June 10 and is expected to take five days.

It will see the replacement of wooden poles and equipment that carry overhead power lines and were installed in the 1950s.

Electricity North West has vowed to keep disruption to a minimum and have organised a public meeting to take place before work starts.

Operations manager Martin Edmundson, said: “We are investing to improve the power supply for a number of residents in Higher Hurdsfield.

“We pride ourselves on providing the best possible service and this work is vital to ensuring we maintain a reliable and safe supply.

“As with any of the work we carry out, we will ensure we keep disruption to a minimum and I want to take this opportunity to thank residents for their patience and support which will allow our engineers to carry out this essential work quickly and safely.”

Generators will be used to keep homes in the area with power during the work, whereas previous similar projects have seen power losses.

James Bussey, project manager for Electricity North West, said: “Previously, we would have switched the power off each morning to permit our engineers to replace the equipment safely.

“This would have resulted in some residents seeing multiple interruptions on consecutive days; disruption that our customers can do without.

“We have included extra funds in this project to provide generators that will remain connected for the duration of the work, minimising interruptions to residents.

“Residents will receive prior warning of when we intend to switch the power off allowing the generators to be connected and again when they are being removed.”

The public meeting will be held at Morton Hall Community Centre on Tuesday, June 4, from 4pm to 7pm. Temporary traffic lights will be on Rainow Road, near the Well Lane interchange, on Wednesday 12 June between 9.30am and 3pm.
